It’s Friday night. You’re just out of an awesome party where you had one too many drinks. You need to get home but your car won’t allow to you drive. This event is not happening in a parallel universe. It will be a reality in the next few years.
The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, also called the DADSS program, began in 2008. It is a collective research partnership between the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The former represents 17 famous automobile manufacturers. The motive of this partnership is to develop alcohol-detection technologies that will prevent the vehicle from being driven by an intoxicated driver. It will stop the driver to drive when his/her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeds the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Currently, DUI convicted drivers are sometimes asked to attach alcohol-detecting interlock systems to their cars. The present system requires the driver to blow into a tube to determine whether he/she is driving under influence. But, the DADSS technology would be different from the present one. The research team is working on making the system accurate and unobstructed. The main purpose is to prevent accidents rather than taking measures after DUI conviction.
The plan is to test a research vehicle enabled with touch-based and breath-based technology by 2015. The research for the same has been already started. It is taking time because the researchers are facing certain issues like placement of the technology and its durability in harsher environment.

If this technology succeeds, it will save countless lives. Right now, alcohol is a cause in about 1/3rd of fatal crashes. This rate will definitely come down after implementation of DADSS. It will also reduce DUIs.
